Waitrose opens new shop in Finchley Central

Waitrose Finchley Central

Waitrose has this morning officially opened its new shop in Finchley Central.

The convenience shop, located on Regents Park Road, was unveiled by a representative from one of the first local causes chosen to benefit from the Waitrose Community Matters ‘green token’ scheme, the North London Hospice, which provides support for those with a potentially life-limiting illness.

They joined Branch Manager Mark Porter and his team in cutting the ribbon and welcoming the shop’s first customers. The first customer in the shop was also presented with a bottle of bubbly to mark the milestone.

Dr Christopher Baxter, Medical Director at North London Hospice, said:

“It was a pleasure to cut the ribbon to mark the opening of the new Waitrose shop. The hospice relies heavily on support from the local community to be able to continue our work and we greatly appreciate being one of the first charities to benefit from the new store opening, especially as this is our 25 year anniversary of providing inpatient care.”

The Royal National Institute of Blind People and Animal Aid & Support charity will join North London Hospice as the first three causes to benefit from the shop’s Community Matters scheme. At the end of the month, £500 will be shared between the three groups according to the number of tokens received from customers. Customers can continue to nominate different good causes each month, resulting in a total of £6,000 donated each year.

In addition, Waitrose Finchley Central Partners will volunteer around 50 hours to local causes throughout the course of the year.

The new shop will provide more than 3,500 food and drink products, as well as a bakery counter and John Lewis ‘click and collect’ service for online purchases. There will also be an outdoor seating area for customers to enjoy.

The shop has created 30 new jobs, with many employees living locally in Finchley. All employees have become Partners in the John Lewis Partnership, the UK’s oldest and largest employee owned business, entitling them to benefits including learning and leisure subsidies, shopping discounts and a share in the company’s annual profits in the form of an annual bonus.

Branch manager, Mark Porter, said:

“We’re delighted to have opened our new shop and have had a great morning welcoming our first customers through the doors. Local residents can look forward to plenty of fantastic food and drink.”
