Sir Nicholas Soames MP opens Waitrose Haywards Heath

Haywards Heath

Sir Nicholas Soames MP unveiled Haywards Heath’s first Waitrose this morning (Thursday, 30th March).

He was joined by Haywards Heath Town Mayor, Cllr Sujan Wickremaratchi; Leader of Mid Sussex District Council, Cllr Garry Wall; Deputy Leader, Cllr Jonathan Ash-Edwards and Waitrose branch manager, Rupert Simpson.

The 29,500 sq ft Perrymount Road branch has become the largest Waitrose in Sussex and is the largest store the retailer will open anywhere in the UK in 2017.

It is only the fourth Waitrose to include its new ‘Kitchen’ concept which offers customers a wide choice of food including breakfast, lunch and dinner options that will be freshly prepared throughout the day to take away or eat in store.

It is also just one of eight Waitrose branches to include a wine bar where customers have the opportunity to enjoy a beer or wine by the glass along with deli platters and tapas.

A sushi bar manned by sushi chefs, who will prepare fresh products in front of customers throughout the day, features too.

A café, fresh meat and fish counters as well as services, including Waitrose Quick Check to enable customers to scan as they shop, online shopping and John Lewis click-and collect, are available to customers.

Waitrose also confirmed the launch of two community-focused initiatives to support local charities and projects in the area which have been nominated by its Haywards Heath customers.

Its Partner Volunteering programme will provide 250 staff hours each year and its Community Matters ‘green token’ scheme will see £1,000 shared between three causes every month.

At the end of their shop, customers can vote for one of the charities by placing a green token in the box. The more tokens a cause gets, the bigger the donation they receive from the £1,000 fund.

Sir Nicholas said:

“I am truly delighted to open this magnificent new Waitrose in Haywards Heath which I am confident will be incredibly well supported by local people and will also provide a magnet for this part of our growing town.

“I have long been a great fan of Waitrose and I am very grateful to them for their generosity and support for local good causes and indeed their unwavering support for British suppliers.

“I wish it great success and I much look forward to using it myself.”

Waitrose branch manager, Rupert Simpson, added:

“We are really proud to have opened in Haywards Heath, to have generated new employment opportunities for local people and to add to the investment the town continues to attract. This is our largest store in Sussex and a real flagship for our brand.”
