Waitrose confirms Leatherhead plans

Waitrose Sign

Waitrose has confirmed that it will open its first shop in Leatherhead in 2016.

The retailer has agreed a long-term lease with Hague Investments Ltd. for a new Waitrose branch in Church Street, which will offer 6,000 sq ft of selling space and 22 parking spaces.

Three smaller units are being converted into one and extended to the rear to accommodate the branch, which will be handed over to the supermarket by summer 2016. It is expected to open soon after at a date to be confirmed.

The store will create more than 60 jobs with recruitment due to start in spring next year. All employees will become Partners in the John Lewis Partnership, the UK’s largest and oldest example of an employee owned business.

As Partners, they will be entitled to benefits, including leisure and learning subsides and a share in profits. This year staff received the equivalent of almost six weeks wages in bonus ensuring a significant proportion of profits go back into the communities in which they trade.

While the retailer is well established across Surrey and only recently opened a new supermarket in Guildford, Waitrose Leatherhead becomes only its third convenience shop in the county.

More than 5,000 products will be available to select from at the new branch, including its essential Waitrose range, freshly made baguettes, hot ready to eat snacking foods and award-winning wines.

Waitrose Director of Development, Nigel Keen, said:

“We realise there has been a great deal of anticipation as to when we would be in a position to confirm that we are coming to Leatherhead and we are delighted that has arrived. We have always been overwhelmed by the number of letters we receive asking us to open here – an ambition we have shared for a long time.

“We now cannot wait to bring together our new team, welcome our new customers and play our part in encouraging shoppers to visit the parade as well as the high street.”

Raf Hayat of Hague Investments Ltd stated:

“Hague Investments are delighted to be able to formally announce that Waitrose will be opening on Church Street in the summer of 2016 which has been eagerly awaited by the local community and which will make a huge positive impact for Leatherhead town centre as a whole.

“The retail mix will be enhanced by Waitrose’s presence and we are certain that Waitrose will attract people from the surrounding areas which in turn will help other retailers in the town to improve their business.

“We would like to acknowledge the support of Mole Valley District Council and all those who have worked closely with us, including our tenants in Church Street, in working together to bring about the positive conclusion of this application “
