Do the hoke poke

Aloha Poke

Waitrose set to be first supermarket to offer authentic Poke.

This summer, Waitrose is set to be the first supermarket to launch Poke, the latest foodie trend to grab the nation.  Noted as a dish to watch by the Waitrose Food and Drink report back in October 2016, the supermarket will soon be offering authentic Hawaiian dishes for customers to enjoy.

Pronounced 'poh-keh', the dish dates back to the 1970’s and translates to ‘to slice or to cut’. Traditionally served as an appetiser, this Hawaiian dish of raw fish or vegetables in a Japanese-inspired soy and sesame marinade is served with rice.  Initially big in LA and New York, its popularity has now hit this side of the Atlantic with restaurants across the country offering the dish. Kurt Zdesar, who founded Japanese restaurant Chotto Matte and Nobu recently opened a Poke restaurant in Mayfair, Black Roe Poke Bar and Grill.

Launching this week are two varieties of Poke: salmon with avocado cream, rocket, edamame (£3.95) and a vegetarian version with golden beetroot and tofu (£3.50).

Waitrose Executive Chef Jonathan Moore comments, ‘Poke is a trend we spotted a few years ago in The States and it has gone from strength to strength, with dedicated restaurants now popping up in the UK. British foodies have fully embraced sushi and ceviche, which are quite similar to Poke, so we expect it to be a real hit for the summer.'
