The Good Food Guide 2018 reveals its best restaurants in the North West

Good Food Guide 2018 Cover

The Good Food Guide has announced its top restaurants and award winners today.  Alongside the finest dining establishments in the country, the guide, owned by Waitrose, celebrates quality eateries and discoveries in local areas. For the North West this includes a Top 10 restaurant - one of only two restaurants scoring a perfect 10 - six restaurants in the Top 50 and ten new entries in the guide.

The Good Food Guide is compiled by combining reader feedback on restaurants up and down the country with anonymous inspections by a team of industry experts.

Best restaurant in the North West

Restaurants from across the region that have made it into the 'UK’s Top 50 Restaurants' have been unveiled, with the top scoring restaurant in the North West named as chef Simon Rogan's restaurant L'Enclume, in Cartmel, Cumbria.  The restaurant is ranked no.2 and also secures a cooking score of 10, making it the sixth year the restaurant has received a perfect 10.

Elizabeth Carter, Waitrose Good Food Guide Editor, says of the restaurant, “L’Enclume packs a major punch, sure of its stature and pedigree. What Simon Rogan is good at is cooking, plain and simple - the actual transformation of  ingredients from their raw state into deep, deliberate tastes. His inspiration is Cumbria, the fiercely seasonal ingredients impeccable.”

Restaurants in the North West appearing in The Good Food Guide’s Top 50

The Top 50 recognises the very best talent in the country; a place on the list represents a huge achievement, with each position earned by its score in The Good Food Guide, editor appraisal and strength of reader feedback.

Other notably high scoring restaurants in the region also featuring in the Top 50, alongside L’Enclume, include:

• Fraiche in Oxton, Merseyside, no.14 with a cooking score of 8

• Adam Reid at The French in Manchester, Greater Manchester, no.17 with a cooking score of 8

• Moor Hall in Aughton, Lancashire, no.26 with a cooking score of 7

• Forest Side in Grasmere, Cumbria, no.30 with a cooking score of 7

• Freemasons at Wiswell, Lancashire, no.44 with a cooking score of 7

Unusual eateries in the North West

• Where the Light Gets In: a huge warehouse style building in Stockport (accessed up some stairs leading off from an alleyway), one floor or which has been transformed into a dining room. With no menu, each dish and wine choice is a surprise.

• The Rabbit in the Moon: found at the top of the National Football Museum in the Urbis building, The Rabbit in the Moon has been created by Michael O'Hare, famous for Leeds' The Man Behind the Curtain. Almost everything is black, from the umami-dusted snacks to the heavy curtains - and even the toilet roll!

• Moor Hall: From ex-l’Enclume chef Mark Birchall, this luxury restaurant-with-rooms is the highest rated new entry in this year’s guide, and has already secured its position as one of the county’s destination restaurants.

• Umezushi: located under a railway arch, Umezushi’s unlikely location hasn’t prevented it from gaining a reputation as Manchester's premier purveyor of sushi and sashimi.

The North West  boasts 14 new entries to this year’s Good Food Guide, which are:

• Moor Hall in Aughton, Lancashire
