The Good Food Guide 2018 reveals its best restaurants in the Midlands

Good Food Guide 2018 - Best New Entry, Salt, Stratford-upon-Avon,Chef Paul Foster

The Good Food Guide has announced its top restaurants and award winners today.  Alongside the finest dining establishments in the country, the guide, owned by Waitrose, celebrates quality eateries and discoveries in local areas. For the Midlands, this includes two Good Food Guide Award winners for Best Front-of-House and Best New Entry, one restaurant in the Top 10, four restaurants in the Top 50 and six new entries. 

The Good Food Guide is compiled by combining reader feedback on restaurants up and down the country with anonymous inspections by a team of industry experts. 

Best restaurant in the Midlands 

Restaurants from across the region that have made it into the 'UK’s Top 50 Restaurants' have been unveiled, with the top-scoring eatery in the Midlands also making it into The Good Food Guide’s Top 10 and named as Best Front-of-House in the Awards.

Restaurant Sat Bains is the highest scoring restaurant from the region and appears at no.4 in the Top 10 with a near-perfect cooking score of 9. Elizabeth Carter, Editor of The Good Food Guide, says of the restaurant, “Service with loads of personality is quite rare, so well done Restaurant Sat Bains for getting it just right. This is a restaurant that understands the word ‘hospitality’, with front-of-house staff noted for being incredibly patient, engaged, informed, with nothing too much trouble. 

“Every diner is made to feel like the most special person in the room and we love the way the maître d’ gives the impression that he has all the time in the world to chat with everyone. Staff really get the fact that eating here, for many, is possibly a once in a lifetime experience, and see it as their duty to make the experience as special as possible, in as relaxed and fun a way as possible.”

Sat Bains is quoted on his award win, saying, “We are absolutely thrilled to have received the Front-of-House award. What makes it so much more special for us is that it comes directly from our customers. Feedback and exceeding guests’ expectations are crucial in delivering a world class service.

“The secret is just listening to our guests. We’ve invested heavily in training the team in order to create a relaxed but professional service and we’re very proud of them all, past and present.”

Restaurants in the Midlands that appear in The Good Food Guide’s Top 50

The Top 50 recognises the very best talent in the UK; a place on the list represents a huge achievement, with each position earned by its score in The Good Food Guide, editor appraisal and strength of reader feedback.

Other notably high scoring restaurants in the region also featuring in the Top 50, alongside Restaurant Sat Bains, include:

• Hambleton Hall in Hambleton, Leicestershire and Rutland

• Adam's in Birmingham, West Midlands

• Simpsons in Birmingham, West Midlands

The Waitrose Good Food Guide 2018 Editors' Awards

Waitrose has also announced the the 2018 Good Food Guide Editors’ Awards. These awards recognise restaurants and chefs who have shown excellence in their field and include two restaurants from the Midlands.

Restaurant Sat Bains, as noted above, has been awarded Best Front-of-House. 

Salt in Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire has been named Best New Entry with a cooking score of 5. 

Elizabeth Carter, Editor of The Good Food Guide says of Salt “When we first came across Paul Foster’s cooking, we were so impressed we awarded him our Up-and-Coming Chef award for 2012. Now his first solo venture has beaten off some really stiff competition to win Best New Entry. 

“Salt is a real passion project for this young chef, made possible by crowdfunding - with contributors paying as little as £20 to help kickstart the business. All I can say is lucky Stratford.”

Paul Foster, Head Chef at Salt comments on their award, "We were totally blown away when we found out that we had won this award, especially because so many amazing restaurants have opened this year. We have been really lucky to find a team that are genuinely lovely people, and they work hard with us to make sure our customers have a great dining experience. This award is recognition of that hard work and we can't wait to celebrate winning it with them."

New Entries 

The Midlands boasts six new entries in this year’s Good Food Guide, which are:

• Salt in Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire

• Harborne Kitchen in Birmingham, West Midlands

• The Riverside in Aymestrey, Herefordshire

• The Baiting House in Upper Sapey, Herefordshire

• Delilah in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland

• Bread and Pullet in Northampton, Northamptonshire

Unusual eateries in the Midlands 

• Salt, Stratford-upon-Avon: As well as being named Best New Entry in The Good Food Guide Editors’ Awards, Paul Foster’s first solo venture was made possible through crowdfunding, with contributors paying as little as £20 to help kickstart the business.

• Harborne Kitchen: This buzzy, neighbourhood venue is considered to be one to watch by the guide and is expected to become a major player on the Birmingham scene.
